Following ingestion of a food allergen(s), a person with food allergies can experience a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called\u00a0anaphylaxis. Allergic reactions can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hives<\/li>\n<li>Flushed skin or rash<\/li>\n<li>Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Face, tongue, or lip swelling<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting and\/or diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal cramps<\/li>\n<li>Coughing or wheezing<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness and\/or lightheadedness<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the throat\u00a0and vocal cords<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<li>Loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Mild Symptoms Can Become More Severe<\/h4>\n<p>Initially mild\u00a0symptoms\u00a0that occur after ingesting a food allergen are not always a measure of mild\u00a0severity. In fact, if not treated promptly, these symptoms can become more serious in a very short amount of time, and could lead to\u00a0<strong>anaphylaxis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Other Allergens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Persons may still be allergic to \u2014 and have serious reactions to \u2014 foods\u00a0other\u00a0than the eight foods identified by the law. So, always be sure to read the food label\u2019s ingredient list carefully to avoid the food allergens in question.<\/p>\n<h3>What to Do If Symptoms Occur<\/h3>\n<p>The appearance of symptoms after eating food may be a sign of a food allergy. The food(s) that caused these symptoms should be avoided, and the affected person, should contact a doctor or health care provider for appropriate testing and evaluation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Persons found to have a food allergy should be taught to\u00a0read labels\u00a0and\u00a0avoid the offending foods.
